The Name REDMAN
It is believed that the name REDMAN originated
in the county of Wexford, Ireland. One of the
earliest references to the family name Redman dates back in
history to the year 1274. There are many variations
to the name, RUDMAN, REDMOND, REDMUN etc are well known examples;
as before literacy became widespread, names were transmitted by
word of mouth, rather than by writing. Mis-hearing and pronunciation
of unfamiliar names of newcomers each contributed to names being
recorded differently through the generations.
Most surnames did not become fixed until the 15th Century. Even
place names were mis-spelt; URCHFONT in Wiltshire for example
was quoted as being HURTSFONT on Elizabeth Giddings birth certificate.
