My families from London

              Cornell and Glen

The Cornell Family

Sarah Cornell married Samuel Nichols on 26 June 1831

Her birth and Baptism are recorded at the LMA in St Mary le bone (film X023/016)

Born 3rd February 1805, Baptised 9th June 1805

Her parents are named as William and Frances

Pallot’s marriage register records the marriage of William Cornell and Frances Hassall in

St James, Westminster 1802.

Samuel and Sarah became the parents of at least four children; George, Emma, Alfred and William Nichols.   At the time of Emma's birth they were living at 9 Frederick Place, Hampstead Road, London.  The marriage was witnessed by William Cornell and Margaret Brian.

Baptismal record of Sarah Cornell

A search for William Cornell in the census returns, to establish him as a father or a brother, revealed him in 1851, a widower aged 74, with his daughter Ann, aged 43, his son Charles aged 29, and his grand daughter Sarah Glen aged 12,  all at
9 Frederick Place.

In 1861 William is also at 9 Frederick Place with his daughter Ann, unmarried, now 53 and his grand son Charles W. Cornell aged 40. The family does not seem to be recorded on the 1841 census

William Cornell’s census record shows his birth in the Parish of Hargrave in Suffolk.

 The Glen Family

John Glen married Hannah Margaret Cornell at All Souls St Marylebone in 1832 [Pallot Marriage Register]

In 1841 they are living in William Street with their two daughters Hannah who is 4,
and Sarah who is 3 [born Sept ¼ 1838 St Pancras Vol 1, pg 271 FreeBMD].

By 1851 Hannah Glen 46, is a widow at home with Mary aged 6, born 1845 and

*John aged 4, born 1847

Her daughter Sarah, aged 12, is at 9 Frederick Place, with her grand father William Cornell.

[A] *John was born St Pancras December ¼ 1849 [Vol 1 pg 317, FreeBMD]

In 1861 Hannah Glen is at home with Hannah, 24 and John now 14 years old.

[A] Sarah aged 22 appears to have left home to become a housemaid at 1 Pilgrim Lane, Hampstead.

She may have married either George Brooman or Thomas Townsend in 1863, but she does not appear on the 1871 or 1881 census with either of these husbands nor as an unmarried person  - so this is probably a false assumption.

In 1871 Samuel Nichols has married Hannah Glen who was aged 66.

Mary Glen is also living with them at 2 Arlington Street, aged 26

Also with them is Thomas Chow, 28, Samuel’s son-in-law & Harry Chow Samuel’s grandson aged 1
