My families from East Anglia

              Thompson, Cooper, Sapey and Rawlinson

Thompson

John Tompson married Ann probably about 1739, for their child John Thompson was born in February 1740/1

The family lived in Norfolk and there were many Johns !

John born 1740/1 had a son John who also had a son John.  This John had a younger brother Robert who was to become my great great grandfather.

He and his wife Susan Bush had three children, Samuel, the youngest, and his wife Anna Maria Pulford  being the father of my grandfather Bernard Bush Thompson. ‘BBT’ as he was always called became the successful headmaster of his own school in Felixtowe  “Eastward Ho! College”, a boarding school suited to boys  -  and one or two small girls who were of a ‘more delicate disposition’.

His wife Daisy Maunder, whose family came from Tavistock in Devon, gave him three children two boys and my mother, and was the matron in the school.

Samuel Thompson’s older brother William, had a great interest in horticulture and with his friend Mr Morgan  founded the well known seed merchants “Thompson and Morgan” in Ipswich.

Cooper

The earliest known Cooper is Johes born about 1600 in North Norfolk.

The following generations - Rogerus and then William, both from Holkham.

Edmundi, William's son was baptised on 22 January 1687 in Sherringham.

His son, Thomas from Hunstanton married a widow Ann Chapman in 1764 at Heacham church. From the gravestone in North Runcton it appears that she was the daughter of Hugh & Ann Rightus.

They seemed to have had 8 children born between 1768 and 1782 - Thomas, Nicholas, Ann, Edmund, Richard, Mary, Sarah and Celia.

Nicholas Cooper, born 21 December 1769 in North Runcton, a village a few miles south of kings Lynn - or Lynn as it was known then. He married Hannah Sapey in St Mary's church, Snettersham, about 8 miles north of Lynn and only a couple of miles north of the well known grounds of Sandringham.

Nicholas and Hannah Cooper had 4 children, Thomas, William, Nicholas and John. John who was born on 10 January 1809 in North Runcton grew up and joined the Royal Navy at the age of 18 boarding HMS Herald.  A sailing career followed which was to last until 1847, serving on many surveying ships in the Mediterranean.

Whilst in Malta he met Elizabeth Davis who was serving on another ship. John and Elizabeth married in St Paul's Cathedral, Malta in March 1841and went on to have four children - Francis, Henry, Harriett and Emma.

Elizabeth Davis who was born in 1823 at sea, was the daughter of Morgan Davis and his wife Ann. Francis & Henry were educated back in England at Hurstpierpoint College. Henry went on to Lancing College and entered the ministry at a church in North Kent.  Francis Thomas Cooper became a Savings bank Clerk, married Susanna Pelling.

Their daughter, Mary Frances married Walter John Redman in Prittlewell, Essex and moved to London where they had their family.

Sapey

The earliest record we have of the Sapey family is that of William Sapey marrying Lydia in the very early 1700s. Their family was born and baptised in Harlpey.

The following generation was from the next village of Little Massingham, a mile or two to the south of Harpley.

William and Hannah Sapey from Little Massingham moved to bring up their family in Snettersham a village some 20 miles away and about 8 miles north of Lynn.  It was here in Snettersham that Hannah's daughter, Hannah, married Nicholas Cooper in 1795.
